Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Adichie has replied to a Catholic Priest who verbally attacked her after comments she made about the Catholic Church in Nigeria during her mother’s funeral mass in Abba community of Anambra state.
Recall that Chimamanda Adichie had earlier stated how her family’s experience during the funerals of her parents reaffirmed her reservations about churches in Nigeria.
Chimamanda who opened up in an article titled ”Dreaming as a single family” which was published in the latest edition of the L’osservatore Romano weekly bulletin, said that so much could have been handled with compassion for the grieving but was not.
The author of several books who lost her mum, Grace Ifeoma Adichie, on March 1, 2021, months after she lost her father also alleged that the church did not treat her family with compassion as they should during the funeral of both her parents.
The celebrated author who revealed that she left the church angrily over the Parish Priest’s verbal attack, said she came back to explain what she said during the interview about the Catholic Church in Nigeria because the Abba community and the Catholic Church in the community mean a lot to her.
Adichie noted that the Parish priest has had several opportunities to call her privately to explain her stance but never did. She also added that Priests are meant to guide parishioners and not attack them.
