Peseiro replaces Rohr as new Super Eagles coach

Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro has been appointed as the new coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria following the unceremonious exit of Franco-German gaffer Gernot Rohr.

Peseiro was announced as the new coach of the Super Eagles on Wednesday by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) moments after a virtual meeting of its Executive Committee.

“After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles,” the statement by the NFF read in part.

”However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer,’’ it added.

Peseiro, 61, whose last job saw him handle the Venezuelan national soccer team has also managed the nation team of Saudi Arabia in the past.

At club level, Peseiro has coached several clubs in his country, including Sporting CP – which he took to the 2005 UEFA Cup Final– and Porto including Egyptian Premier League side Al Ahly.
